Habits are the building blocks of our lives, shaping our days and ultimately our destinies. Whether you're aiming for personal growth, enhanced productivity, or simply a happier and healthier lifestyle, incorporating new habits can be the catalyst for positive change. Here I am going to share five habits that I've started to implement into my own life that have proven to make me happier and healthier all around.

<span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(13, 13, 13); color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Söhne, ui-sans-serif, system-ui, -apple-system, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Ubuntu, Cantarell, "Noto Sans", sans-serif, "Helvetica Neue", Arial, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Noto Color Emoji"; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Don't get me wrong, it's still a process and there is plenty more I plan on trying, but this is where I started and so far I'm happy with the results.

<ol style="border: 0px solid rgb(227, 227, 227); box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(13, 13, 13); color: #0d0d0d; counter-reset: list-number 0; display: flex; flex-direction: column; font-family: Söhne, ui-sans-serif, system-ui, -apple-system, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Ubuntu, Cantarell, "Noto Sans", sans-serif, "Helvetica Neue", Arial, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Noto Color Emoji"; font-size: 16px; list-style: none; margin: 1.25em 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left; white-space: pre-wrap;">

Morning Routine Mastery:

The way you start your day sets the tone for everything that follows. Designing a morning routine tailored to your needs and goals can supercharge your productivity and mindset. Consider incorporating activities such as meditation, journaling, exercise, or reading into your mornings. These rituals can help you center yourself, cultivate gratitude, and set clear intentions for the day ahead.

I plan on doing a separate post about my morning routine and all of the new serums and potions I've been trying. But for now I want to say that aside from not starting my day with immediately scrolling on my phone, one of my favorite things I've incorporated into my morning routine was red light therapy. Not only is it great for my skin, but the practice gives me something to do with my hands while I take the time to set my intentions for the day. Click here to see the Red Light Wand that I use. I am sure there are better machines out there but right now your girl is on a budget and this was a way for me to try something new without breaking the bank and as of right now I have no complaints.

Mindful Consumption:

In today's fast-paced world, we're bombarded with information, distractions, and stimuli. Practicing mindful consumption involves being intentional about what you allow into your mind and body. This could mean limiting your time on social media, unsubscribing from unnecessary emails, or curating your media diet to include content that inspires and educates you. By being more selective about what you consume, you can reduce stress, improve focus, and reclaim precious time for activities that truly nourish your soul.

I've spent some time the last few months going through who I follow on social media and asking myself if their content is bringing positivity into my life or negativity. If its the latter, I've been either muting or unfollowing because right now I'm focused on consuming content that encourages me, challenges me and inspires me. Another thing that I've done is set timers for all of my apps. I've allotted a specific amount of time for social media and when the timer goes off, I am locked out of the app until a new day starts. Take a few moments each day to reflect on the things you're thankful for, whether big or small. This could be anything from the warmth of the sun on your face to the support of loved ones or the opportunities that come your way. Keeping a gratitude journal or simply mentally acknowledging your blessings can shift your perspective and foster a greater sense of contentment and abundance.

I think the important thing about this practice to remember is that some days it may not feel so easy to identify a grateful moment you might have had. And that is ok. If you can't think of anything else you can be thankful that you woke up and were given the chance to live another day. I know that may sound cliche but it's still true. Not everyone is going to wake up tomorrow and if you do, that is something to be thankful for. What I love about this practice is that it challenges your mind to look at things in a different light, you can be thankful that you ran into a friend you hadn't seen in awhile, you can be thankful that it didn't rain when it was supposed to be stormy, you can be thankful that your favorite TV show has a new episode or favorite author has a new book or favorite musician has a new album, you can be thankful that you got to witness a child full on belly laughing or a couple dancing in the park. There are so many beautiful moments to be thankful for that are overlooked everyday. This practice helps you recognize them.
<p style="--tw-border-spacing-x: 0; --tw-border-spacing-y: 0; --tw-ring-color: rgba(69,89,164,0.5); --tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; --tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 transparent; Incorporate an evening reflection ritual to review your accomplishments, acknowledge areas for improvement, and prepare for restorative sleep. Spend a few minutes journaling about your day, expressing gratitude, and setting intentions for the following day. This practice not only promotes self-awareness and personal growth but also helps you unwind and decompress, ensuring you wake up refreshed and ready to tackle the day ahead.

I am someone who still uses a paper planner on top of a digital one and I've found that it is a great place for me to recap the day, as well as set goals for the week, month and year. For me, I like that it is all in one place and that it's something that I already had in my routine I'm just modifying how I use it a little. You can check out the planner that I use here.

<p style="border: 0px solid rgb(227, 227, 227); box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(13, 13, 13); color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Söhne, ui-sans-serif, system-ui, -apple-system, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Ubuntu, Cantarell, "Noto Sans", sans-serif, "Helvetica Neue", Arial, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Noto Color Emoji"; font-size: 16px; margin: 1.25em 0px 0px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Incorporating these five habits into your daily life may require some initial effort and discipline, but the long-term benefits are well worth it. Remember, transformation is a journey, not a destination. And consistency is the key. It's important to be patient with yourself, to celebrate your progress, and to keep striving to become the best version of yourself. I've learned that by embracing these habits, I am actively choosing to cultivate a life filled with purpose, joy, and fulfillment and that's all I could ask for.
brionyskerjancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00303629736063116733noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27558767.post-68868481068406164222015-08-10T00:30:00.001-04:002015-08-10T11:13:09.277-04:00Winding Down and A little Catch Up Sesh
It’s been about a year since I’ve posted on this blog. Life got busy, changes happened, choices were made and the blog got put on the back burner. When I started blogging, it was an outlet for me to share what was going on in my life with my family and a place where I could be creative. It gradually became something I felt like I had to do, instead of something I felt like I wanted to do. So when stuff started to pile up and my days started to get more and more full, it was an easy choice to step back and reevaluate how important this outlet was for me at the time.

Fast forward to now and a year has passed, I’ve started to miss this form of creativity and want to explore the idea of blogging again. I am not sure how often I am going to post or what content I want to put out yet, but I do know that I want to get back into photography, filming and designing and I will definitely be sharing those three things with you.

I’d love for you to give the above video a watch and if you enjoy it go ahead and subscribe to my channel and click that like button. Things are currently under construction and will be beautified as time goes by, but until then I still want to create, share and connect with you, so if you have a blog or YouTube channel you’d like to share please leave it in the comment section and I will definitely check it out.
It's been awhile since my last post, life happened and I took a little break from blogging. But I am back and I thought I'd start things off with a sneak peek of my new apartment. I moved into my own space at the beginning of June, with just my bedroom furniture and a few dishes. Slowly over the last few months I have acquired furniture and furnishings (a big thanks to my parents) and made this space my own. The bedroom and kitchen still need a little work, so I'll save that part of the tour for another day.

The main part of my space is open concept, you start in the living room and that leads into the dining/eat-in kitchen. I knew when I first toured the apartment, that if I moved in I would want a sectional. I felt like it would really help define the living area. I also knew I wanted to put my desk off the back, so I'd be able to have a little work station. For me a couch needs to be deep set and extremely comfortable. This particular sectional met all of my expectations and after being marked down over 50%, I knew it was the one for me.

The chair, book shelf and little table were from my previous bedroom. We gave the chair a little face lift, by applying a couple coats of grey paint and a nice faux hide fabric to the cushion. A few little tweaks was just what it needed for it to fit in perfectly with my new decor. I decided to fill up the bare walls with a collection of personal photographs and quotable prints. I've been so blessed to be able to travel all over the world and I wanted to feature images from some of my favorite places.

One thing that I knew I wanted to include was translucent items. Because the space is smaller, it helps that my desk chair is see-through, it doesn't obstruct your view when looking into each space. I like my little tray as well because it keeps things organized and in place without chopping up the surface area of my desk.

The cow hide rug is from my previous bedroom, when I first walked through the space I visualized it under the kitchen table and I was so happy when it ended up working out. I got the table on sale from Target, it was seriously a steal at 75% off. The chairs are from Ikea. I originally had the white version of my desk chair in mind, but they were $70 a piece. Not really in the budget. So, I wandered through Ikea and found these guys, they had a similar look but they were only $15 a piece. I love the contrast between the white chairs and the texture of the cow hide and the steel and wood table.

I hope you enjoyed this little peek into my space. I am so happy with how it has turned out so far. It is a true reflection of my style and I absolutely love coming home to it every night.
What can I say about my momma... She is a constant source of love and encouragement in my life. She can make me laugh so hard I can't breathe just by driving in the car with me, she is an incredibly funny/fearless dancer, she is always willing to give more, do more, love more. She has played the role of my comforter, friend and sounding board. She is irreplaceable!
I absolutely love SoulPancake. They create beautiful videos centered around starting deeper discussions about life and they are determined to put love and positivity out in the world. This particular video became a favorite of mine and since it has stuck with me, I thought I'd share it with you. I love the challenge it presented and the results it received. I think we should all write ourselves a love letter.

Here is my letter... what would yours say?

Dear Self,

When I think about you and all that you've done so far in your 30yrs, I am overcome with joy and pride. While your life looks nothing like what you dreamed it would as a young girl, it is still incredibly full and well lived. The way you've embraced all the opportunities life has thrown at you, the way you've faced fears and gone into adventures on your own, I think about those things and am blown away at what you've been blessed to see and experience. It makes me want even more for you. So much more.

I know that you like who you are, but you still have insecurities you must face. Those pesky things will hinder your future if you don't begin to speak the truth over yourself. You may not be perfect, but you are beautiful. You may not be organized, but you can create order. You may not be athletic, but you can be active. Speak good things over yourself. Because no matter what you have done, there is still so much more for you to do. I believe in you and I can see the potential God has placed inside of you.

That's not to say I think you are perfect, there is plenty for you to work on and improve. In this life, there's always room for growth. I admire that when you are faced with a challenge you push yourself to see past the obstacle. You strive to not let it overwhelm you, rather run towards it knowing that with determination and time you can overcome it. Of course there are going to be times when you will fall, you are human, remember to be kind to yourself. I would love to see you apply this mindset to so many other parts of your life, not just with personality quirks, or life's unfortunate messes but to your health and your dreams. I know that when you do, so many new doors are going to open for you.

Continue to set yourself goals and do your best to rise above them. Keep walking in love and push yourself to reflect God's grace. Never forget that this is your one precious life, don't take a day of it for granted. Live purposefully and with a heart filled with joy because you were made for this moment, created for this time, to make a difference, to be a light, to love and be loved.

Needless to say I love you and I think you are pretty awesome.

This week I wanted to share a little list of things that once might have made me feel guilty but I've since found a new perspective on. When all of your friends are married with children, it's going to sound funny but you can sometimes start acting like you are married with children. I'm sure you are all wondering what I mean by that statement. Let me explain, it isn't so much that you have an imaginary husband and kids making demands and expecting things from you. What I mean is that you start modeling your lifestyle to match theirs. We tend to emulate those closest to us. This isn't a bad thing, per se, but at the same time your life shouldn't always look like theirs. You are in a different stage than they are, and that is ok. You can still be a little bit selfish and you don't have to feel guilty about it.

1// Do not feel guilty about sleeping in on your days off.
Listen, I love a good sleep. On my days off, the number one thing on my list of things I want to do is to sleep in. Will this change eventually, I don't know, for now I still value it like gold. When I first moved to Florida and started my experience of living with a family, I have to say I felt a bit guilty about sleeping in. It wasn't anything my friends did, it was just something I felt. Like I was being unproductive or that I could be helping them. The thing is, those two things are true in some ways... but I have since recognized that as long as I get what I need to done they will manage fine without me. I have the luxury of not having other people dependent on me in the morning, this will not always be the case. But for now, it is and I am going to enjoy it for all its worth.

2// Do not feel guilty that your budget is different than theirs.
When you are responsible for you and only you, your budget is going to be a little bit freer than say someone who has a husband or someone who has kids. Your spending habits will be different because you've set your budget to a party of one's lifestyle, there is no one else sharing your income. On the same note, because some of your friends may be living on two incomes they may be able to do things and go places that your pocket book can't spring for. There is no shame in that, if anything use it as motivation to start saving more.

3// Do not feel guilty about taking a break.
When you are on your own, and use to being alone. It is easy to get over stimulated when you are surrounded by all the noise that little ones tend to make. I think most parents feel this way as well at times, the only difference between you and them is that it is now their normal. It isn't your normal, you don't have to feel bad about wanting down time. After you have kids down time becomes a rarity and not something you can really expect, but as a single you can expect it.

4// Do not feel guilty about wanting girl time.
This is a hard one because it is easy to come off as a jerk, as if you don't like your friends husband and can't stand their kids. This obviously isn't the case, but anytime you are trying not to include certain people it can come off negative. When it comes to wanting girl time it's best to seek out your fellow single girls, if you don't have that option things get a little more complicated. The thing is, most of your married friends want to include their spouses because their spouses are their best friends. They love them and want them to be included. This is a natural thing. It is understandable. At the same time it isn't always ideal for you. There is only so much fun to be had when you are always the 3rd or 5th wheel. Sometimes you just want one on one time with your girlfriends. No husband or kid distractions. This is one of the situations where you will probably have to plan an outing in advance, so they can have their spouses make plans and get a sitter lined up for their kids. The important thing to note here is that it is ok to ask your friends for this kind of hangout every once in awhile, you don't have to feel guilty about it.

5// Do not feel guilty about saying NO.
Your married friends want alone time with each other, they may come to you and ask you to watch their kids. If you like babysitting then by all means offer your services on the regular, but on the flip side if it's not your cup-o-tea, they have other options out there they can utilize. You shouldn't feel obligated. Most of your friends with kids have other friends with kids, they can do the kid trade-off for a night-off and if that isn't an option there are always teenagers eager to make babysitting money. There is no reason to feel guilt, it is ok to say no sometimes. On that note, when it comes to family type outings such as kids movies, playground dates, the zoo, etc, if you don't think it's something you'd enjoy, just be honest. Most of the time your friends are inviting you with no expectations, they just want you to feel included. It is better that they invite you to everything, than they not invite you to anything.

Whenever I talk to other singles that are surrounded by friends that are married or have growing families, I hear a lot pertaining to the above. I think the important thing is to keep the dialogue open. Just like with any other relationship, communication is everything. You love your married friends, they love you. That is a truth that you can rest in. The sticky part is learning how to be what the other person needs. Those needs change depending on what chapter of life you are in, what you need from a friend as a single is often times different than what your girlfriend who is no longer single may need from you. As a single you are still looking for companionship, those few individuals to go through life with, share your ordinary every day experiences with. When you are married you have that companion in your spouse, the role of your girlfriends shift. I encourage you to make time for your friends, plan a coffee date and be honest about what you need from them and return ask what they need from you.

(I just want to make a small note, that I recognize the above list is a tad on the selfish side. I'm not saying that you should always say no or that you should never offer to help your friends... what I am saying is that it's ok to live your life as a single even though you are surrounded by families.)
Earlier this week I was on my way to a photo-shoot for www.Freshmommyblog.com and I literally drove into a wall of fog. It was so intense that when you drove towards the island over the causeway, you couldn't even see the land on the other side. My first thought was that we should make a new plan, we were definitely not going to get the golden hour light we were aiming for. You couldn't see the sun at all, everything was completely covered. But after sending a few phone pictures to Tabitha and chatting about our options, we decided to go for it. It may not have been our original plan but that doesn't mean it couldn't be better. The scene was like something out of a movie, the water was quiet and the whole beach seemed as if it was part of the clouds. I wish I had taken more pictures of the actual fog to show you, these are the few that I did happen to get.

This was driving towards the island.

Once you made it to the other side of the causeway you could see a little more, but there was still no horizon in sight.

All of the seagulls were grounded, waiting out the fog. There were hundreds of them all over the beach.

When looking out over the beach, ocean & sky you'd normally be able to see them all distinctly,

but on this day they all blended into one.

Driving back to the the park, after the shoot, it looked as if we were heading into a scene out of an epic adventure film.

I honestly felt like a kid, I was filled with such a childlike wonder. It was something amazing to behold; watching it roll in and blanket everything. What once was a familiar place to me, was made completely new. It was such a fun surprise and made a normal day feel like an amazing adventure.

I've always been pretty lucky when it comes to being surrounded by a strong friend group. No matter where I've lived, I always had that connection. Honestly, in my younger years it was easy. I was always in environments that fostered new friendships. Now that I've experienced moving to a new place as an adult, I can tell you from experience things change. Finding new friends when you are 30 and single, is a lot like dating. Taking that leap and asking someone if they want to hang out or if you can get their contact information, is almost always nerve racking and awkward. Most of the time you are trying to read their body language, you are gaging their reactions during your conversation to see if they are open to a new friendship. If you feel good about it, you then have to either pray they suggest a hang out or you have to bite the bullet, ask them, and risk what most of us fear, rejection.

THE BRUSH OFF
Whether it's new friendships or new relationships there are a handful of recognizable brush offs, as soon as you get them you know you are never going to see that person again. When that happens, no matter how self assured you are, you get that tinge of discomfort. In a matter of seconds your flesh starts questioning not being good enough, cool enough, creative enough, funny enough, etc. This is a natural response, everyone wants to be accepted and loved. When that isn't their reaction we naturally want to reflect on why. The important thing is to not dwell on it. When faced with the brush off, put a smile on your face and go along with whatever polite non-committal response they are giving you. Don't try to force it.

YOU, GOTTA BE YOU
I look at rejection like this, we can't over curate ourselves. At this point in life, we should know who we are and the type of people we want around us. Yes, there will always be things for us to work on and improve, but if someone doesn't like you, as you are, they aren't your ideal friend candidate. It's that simple and it is OK. You aren't going to be friends with everyone. It's important to recognize the truth in the rejection, if that person doesn't enjoy being around you, than that friendship definitely won't bring joy to your life. So shake it off, scan the room and move on.

WALK IN CONFIDENCE & POSITIVITY
Confidence is attractive. The more sure of yourself you are, the more people want to be around you. People tend to gravitate towards what they want reflected in their own life. So, I encourage you to get into the habit of graciously speaking your mind, making eye contact and walking tall. Positive people also attract others, not many people want to spend their precious free time with a debbie downer or a drama queen. When you're in your 30's, your free time is valuable... spending it listening to someone cry or whine is not what anyone wants. The mass majority of people, want to surround themselves with others that are able to laugh at life and see the good in it. Obviously, we all experience bad times... but you aren't going to walk up to a stranger and talk to them about it. At least I hope you aren't.

FINDING OTHERS LIKE YOU
One of the biggest hurdles you have to overcome is actually knowing where to meet new people. This may sounds silly, but it's true. If you have just moved to a new city and you aren't comfortable in the bar or club scene, it can be quite difficult to casually run into other singles. Not only do you have to find the the socializing opportunities, but you have to be willing to walk into them alone. Being that the whole point of going to these social functions is to make new friends, hopefully you won't be alone long. But the initial aloneness can be quite scary. If this is you, here are a few suggestions to get the ball rolling.

1// Meetup.com, this site is full of groups you can join. Those groups host daily, weekly and monthly outings for everything from biking, crafting, traveling, cooking, etc. The list goes on and on. I am signed up on this site, it is definitely full of lots of opportunities. I just have to get over what I mentioned earlier, the initial scary going into it aloneness.

2// Sign Up for Groupon and LivingSocial, and keep your eyes peeled for deals on activities and classes that interest you. If you attend these things, you will be surrounded by people with similar interests and that is always a good foot to start on.

3// Volunteer, find an organization you can get behind and see how you can help. There, you will find passionate people who enjoy giving back and making a difference. Two qualities we should all want in our friends.

4// Get tied into a church. Honestly, every other time I've moved this has been a key one for me. Finding a new church is often like finding a built in friend group. Most of the people will be excited you are there, and eager to learn more about you and befriend you. Churches often have small groups you can join, sports teams, clubs, etc. Being that I moved to Florida as part of a church plant, this wasn't an avenue that worked for me this time.

5// Hit the dog park. This may be a funny one but dog parks are really social, the animals are playing together and you get to talking with all of the other owners. I also find that people that take their dogs to dog parks are usually pretty friendly. There is a camaraderie amongst dog-parents. Haha. Sadly, I don't have a dog. However, I've been to the park when I've dog sat and I've experienced the socializing... so I know there is potential there.

DON'T BE AFRAID OF AWKWARD
Putting yourself out there is scary, but it is also exciting. The best thing you can do is embrace the awkwardness, accept that it is going to be there. Once you do it really won't be a big deal and you'll recognize in the scheme of things that it doesn't usually last that long. Once you've overcome the biggest hurdle of finding people to meet and you've harnessed the awkwardness, you really just have to be open, be yourself and ask a few genuine questions. Once you do, be ready to react to their response (good or bad) in a graceful way. Don't get discouraged, you're bound to meet people who are as cool as you.

I also just want to say, I know that there are a number of people out there that don't struggle with making new friends. They have been gifted with the social butterfly gene and they thrive in all social settings, you my lovely are a rare and precious gem... please keep an eye out for us wallflowers. When you see us taking the leap, it would be super awesome if you took us under your wing.

Now that I have to wake up before the sun... I've been in need of some yummy breakfast solutions. As most of you know, I am not an early riser naturally. So that being said, getting up an extra 30min to make myself breakfast is pretty much out of the question. I have not come to the point where I will sacrifice sleep for food. Knowing this, and wanting to stick to my health bucket list and my financial bucket list I decided to try out the muffin tin movement. I don't know if you've heard, but you can make almost anything in a muffin tin.

Today I decided to do a make-shift omelet/no crust quiche thingy. I like the idea of being able to grab one, pop it in the microwave for a minute and then be out the door. Going through Pinterest I didn't really see the exact mixture I wanted to make so I just kind of played it be ear. Or eye. Well, you get what I'm saying.

To start things off I preheated the oven to 350F and brought some water to a boil for my veggies. I let all my veggies cook for around 5min, just to soften them up. I put them directly into an ice bath, to keep them from cooking through and becoming too mushy. While the oven was heating up I beat 3 Medium Eggs together with 2/3 cup of Egg Whites and then stirred in 4oz of Skim Milk and a little Salt and Pepper.

Once my mixture was ready, I sprayed my pan with olive oil and then placed all of my ingredients into each of the cups. I decided to do a mixture of asparagus and carrots in the first three and in the other three I did broccoli and carrots. To finish them off, I added a little sliced turkey and goat cheese. Once I was happy with how everything was dispersed, I put it in the oven for 25min. (Give or take a few minutes.)

Ingredients and Directions //

Medium Eggs - 3

Egg Beaters Egg Whites - 2/3 Cup

Skim Milk - 4oz

Broccoli - 1 Cup

Asparagus - 8 Stalks

Carrots - 1/2 Cup (I bought the thinly shredded carrots.)

Boars Head Turkey - 3 thinly sliced pieces

Goat Cheese - 1/4 Cup

One - 6 Cup Muffin Tin

Oven Temp: 350 F

Time Cook: 25min

I poked mine in the center to make sure they were cooked all the way through. Our oven is a bit finicky and didn't quite reach 350 F, so I kept mine in for around 35min. I then let them cool for 10min and then they were ready to eat. Or, you can stick them in the fridge like I plan to and eat them for breakfast throughout the week.

I ended up having some for dinner tonight and I have to say they were delicious. I warmed them up, but I think that they will taste great chilled as well. I am definitely happy with them and I think they will be a yummy solution for my early mornings.

For my next muffin tin adventure I am thinking about a broccoli, cheese and egg noodle casserole for a lunch option.

Do you have any recipes you think I should try?

We've gotten to the fun bucket list... the one where we talk about money. Ahhh! Let's just put it out there, not many people enjoy talking about money. Many of us cringe at the words budget and saving. Not because we think they lack value but because we know they are tools that often require sacrifice in the now. I think we all go into the year with the best of intentions but a lot of the time we don't really write out a plan of action. In a sense, this is my plan of action. It is a bit vague but these are some of the things I know need major work in order for me to be happy with where I am financially by the end of 2014.

1| Make short term savings goals
I'm going to be honest here, I am not the best at saving. Unless I have a trip or item that I am saving for, I tend to live pay check to pay check. This is definitely something I want that to change in 2014. This year I want to start actively budgeting so I can pay things off quicker and start saving for new opportunities and life's surprises.

2| Be accountable to my budget
So if my number one item hits on creating a budget, my number two is to find people in my life that will encourage me and keep me accountable to said budget. Being a single person I think that it is important to find friends you trust that will help you talk through big purchases that will effect your budget. Because, we don't have to run our spending by a spouse or a significant other sometimes it leads to unwise choices. Accountability is key to stopping buyers remorse.

3| Write down my longterm dreams and start money aside to make them a reality
We all have dreams, most of those dreams need to be financed in one way or another. I plan to write down some of the things I want to have unfold in my future and I am going to start saving for them. It's so easy to put saving for the longterm off. We saw we'll start next week or next month or next year because sometimes setting aside a certain amount isn't convenient or fun. But if we keep putting it off our dreams may never happen. When months come this year where it isn't easy to save, I want to challenge myself to maybe sacrifice a little now so those dreams I have will one day be a reality.

4| Overcome impulse spending
There are a few things in my life that I need to be more aware of how much money I am spending on them. It is really easy for me to buy a song or App on iTunes and not even think about how they add up. I thoroughly enjoy popping into Ulta or Sephora and trying new makeup. I am a sucker for pretty much everything in Target. Don't get me started on Starbucks. All of the above are places I spend money at on the regular and I don't need to be. This is partly going to go along with budget but I felt it needed it's own number because it needed to be recognized as a bad habit that I want to change.

5| Give more
I love being able to bless people. Whether it's paying for the person behind me in the Starbucks line, leaving an extra large tip for my waiter or giving more towards my church and missions. It makes me happy to be able to give and make an impact on others. This is something I want to integrate in my 2014 budget. I honestly believe in the principle of sowing and reaping, and while I know that it doesn't always have to be about money, I've seen the fruits of that portion of it in my life with just the little I've been able to do. I've never left a situation where I did something nice for someone else and felt bad about it or regretted it. I've always left feeling really excited and full of joy, definitely two attributes I want to fill my life.

I also wanted to share this cool savings plan that has been going around the web. Recently, I've seen it being talked about on the news, Facebook and a lot of blogs. The concept is simple, there are 52 weeks in the year, each week you will set aside a dollar amount. The amount starts at $1 and ends at $52. By the end of the year you will have $1,376 saved. That's a nice chunk of change.

Most of the versions I've seen of this savings plan have you putting $1 away in week one, $2 in week two and so on. I think this is great and if it works for you, go for it! I've decided to do it a little bit different. I'm flipping the amounts, so I will be saving $52 in week one, $51 in week two and so on. I'm doing this for two reasons, I like starting the sum high because I can look forward to the amount I have to save going down each week. The second reason is because the months of November and December tend to have a lot of outflow of cash for me and it's just easier for me to set aside the higher amounts now. Whichever way you choose to save, if you are faithful, you will end up with $1,376 in the bank.

It's a new year and with a new year comes a whole new list of things I'd like to do and experience. This year instead of making Resolutions, I decided to make Bucket Lists. Not because the two are really all that different but because I look at them differently. My personal life bucket list is full of experiences and adventures I WANT to have, the important word there being want. A lot of the time resolutions are things we know are good for us and things we know we should do, but rarely warrant the enthusiasm a bucket list item gets because we don't see them in the same light. I am going to challenge my way of normally seeing resolutions and make a couple bucket lists for this year. They aren't all going to be life altering but they are things I want to cross off, so to start get things going here is my 2014 Beauty Bucket List...

1| Be more adventurous with my hair.
I have a curly mop on my head, I've kept the cut relatively the same for the last few years. Long layers are my comfort zone. Recently my hair has been going through a bit of a change I think, the texture is different in the back and it is getting much more tangled. I've decided that it is time to really give it a good snip. I am not going to do anything too crazy, but I am looking into cutting shorter layers and maybe even shaggy side swept bangs. Because I wear my hair curly more than anything else, I am still thinking on the bangs part... I've wanted them for a year now and every time I go I end up talking myself out of it. The thing is with shorter layers all around the bangs will blend in better... so if I am going to do it, now would be the best time. I actually have a hair appointment set for Thursday, so I will be sure to share a pic on Instagram after I get it done.

2| Figure out the right skincare regimen for my face.
I'm 30 and I still don't really know my skin type. I am determined to figure out what products will work best for me this year. I am even considering getting a proper facial so that I can have a professional point me in the right direction. I like the products I am using right now, but I think there might be something better suited for me out there. Skincare is really overwhelming for me when I go shopping, so I tend to make quick decisions. I want to invest now in products that will help my skin in the future.

3| Play more with eye shadows.
This is pretty self explanatory, I love the idea of eye shadow and I love all of the colors but I tend to stick with a neutral look when I am doing my makeup in the morning. One of the reasons is because my eye makeup never lasts, I am looking into finding a primer that will actually help my makeup stay put all day. Another reason is because my eye lid is relatively small and the space between my lid and my brow bone isn't much bigger, I have to learn how to modify the tutorials I watch to work for my eye shape.

4| Master the art of eye liner.
I am horrible at eye liner. I don't know why it is so hard for me but it is. This year I am making it my number one goal to either find a brush or applicator that is fool proof or just practice practice practice until it becomes so easy I don't even know I'm doing it. I've already started a list of some brands I'd like to try. I'll be sure to keep you updated on my progress.

5| Give Shallac a try.
When it comes to nails, I love wearing all different kinds of colors. However, I hate actually painting my nails. I am not that great at it, I am never patient enough between coats or at the end and I get really frustrated with how quickly you have to do it all over again. I don't go to the salon often, because there are other things I'd rather spend my money on, but when I have gone I've tried the gel manicures and they were quite impressive. Over the past few months quite a few at home gel options have come out and I am going to look into getting a system for myself. I know with shellac I'll still have to be patient, which very well might be my downfall, but I am excited to give it a try.

This past year was a full one, looking back over it I can't help but smile at all the fun adventures I had and all the opportunities I was given to grow and change. Like so many others in the blogosphere, I too am taking the time to reminisce and recap all the treasures that I will be taking away from 2013.

What I Learned

I learned a lot this year, but the one thing that sticks out most to me is, grasping on a deeper level, that finding joy and contentment in life is greatly impacted by how I look at my life. I've said it before and I will probably say it again... it is easy to compare your life, your circumstances, to all those around you and in doing that it is easy to fall into a mindset of "I'm not where I should be, or who I should be." I know I am not the only one that has battled with the comparison monster. I think we all do in one way or another. Being that I turned 30 this year, I definitely had more battles with that beast than my norm. I was hit with the "What the heck, why do my friends this age have husbands, children, houses, etc. and I am still single, waiting, wishing, hoping?" It's not that I am impatient for those chapters to start, more it is feeling like because they haven't started yet you are behind and it's because of something you've done. Going through these battles has really pushed me to recognize the blessings and experiences I have. I may not have a husband or children yet but I have an amazing group of people around me that I love and cherish and that I have the privilege to share life with. I may not have my own place yet, but I have the opportunity to save and get out a debt while living with some of my best friends. I may not have the job of my dreams, but I have a job that I enjoy, I'm meeting new people and I am learning new things. Changing the way I looked at these things has helped me truly feel happy about where I am at this moment. I am in no way satisfied, I still want more and I will continue to dream... but I am content and happy and those are two things I will not take for granted.

What I Discovered

This year I discovered YouTube. I know what you are thinking, "where have you been, under a rock?" No, it isn't that I never watched YouTube before, I had definitely seen my fair share of videos before this year, but this year I discovered professional YouTubers that upload weekly and put inspiring content out on the regular. Whether they be beauty bloggers, world travelers, videographers or musicians there is an arsenal of talent and inspiration on YouTube that I have just begun to tap into. To be honest, I don't really watch much TV any more. I have YouTube channels that fill my subscription box and when I have down time I watch them and learn new things and on many occasion laugh my face off.

What I Experienced

This year I had a few new experiences, one of them that sticks out is going back to work in a corporate setting. For the last two years I worked from home, so going back into the work force was definitely a major change. To be honest, it is recent and I am still adjusting but it is something that has pushed me to grow in many ways. One of those ways is to get back on a normal sleeping scheduling. That may sound silly, but when you are single and working from home you can pretty much set any schedule you like. I would work throughout the day but it didn't have to be back to back hours. There were times when I would work through the night and then sleep until 11am. It was like being back in college, on the days I didn't have class I would stay up insanely late and then sleep all day. Why, because I could and I also had the insane notion that I was more creative at night. So that being said, the new job has reintroduced me to 5am. I can't say I am a fan, but it is getting easier. The job has also given me the opportunity to meet new people and just interact with others. When you work alone from home, it can be easy to turn into a hermit. I've really enjoyed having co-workers again and I am hoping to make some new friends and branch out of the comfortable shell that I've been living in.

What I Loved

I love that fact that this year I was able to spend time with my family and every single one of my best girl friends. It may not sound like a big deal but it is quite a feat because they all live in different States, have full time jobs and the majority of them have growing families. It is honestly something that has never happened in years past and I don't know if it will ever happen again. Being able to connect with all of them has made me feel so lucky. Not only am I blessed to have so many amazing women in my life, but I got to have fun adventures with every single one of them. I was able to make memories that I will cherish forever. This year was full of things to look back on and love, but exploring Epcot with Ashley and her family, rocking out to Taylor Swift with Erin, hitting up Universal Studios with Gerri and her two boys (along with many mini-dates on my trips home,) having sleep overs and dancing around the living room with Jess and her girls, lunch dates with Amanda, talking for hours over coffee with Rachel, exploring Knoxville with Courtney and her family, having daily adventures with Tab and her brood and of course watching my Baby Bro get married to the love of his life and getting to spend Christmas with all of my fam in Florida... all of these experiences take the 2013 cake for me.

This year has been an amazing one, while there were challenging times and scary times there were also times filled with love and joy. I am happy with where I am and who I am at the end of this year, and I am looking forward to what 2014 has in store.

I hope you all have an AMAZING NEW YEARS EVE celebrating with the ones you love.
It is officially Christmas! I've been slacking on my blog posts this week, sorry about that friends. I have been really enjoying spending my time with my family. I am so blessed to have them all here with me in Florida. Even though I am tired, I am honestly having the hardest time falling asleep. Haha. I feel like a kid again, I'm so excited for the morning :) I can't wait for our yummy French Toast casserole and for everyone to open their presents.
It's been a few weeks since my last "Shop the Trend" post, that isn't because there haven't been any trends catching my eye, it's because time has gone into warped speed since I started my new job. LOL. Well that and we are already in the month of December and I have been creating more posts focused on gifting.

All that being said, I am currently liking the coated denim trend. I like the look because it is a bit rocker and can be very chic. If done right, the denim can almost take on a leather look. At half the cost of a nice pair of leather pants, that in itself makes me extremely happy. But if I am being honest, I think it caught my eye mostly because it reminds me of when I was in High School. LOL. I don't know about you, but there was a similar sheen type look going around when I was a Sophomore and Junior, and I can tell ya I had a few pairs. With this particular trend it has taken a little while for it to reach the Plus size market, that is why I waited to share it. I wanted some nice options for those of you who are curvy like me.

Have you been rocking the coated denim trend? Is this a trend you see yourself trying? Are there any trends you are currently loving?

As you all know, I've recently moved, I wanted to give you a little look into what I've done to my space so far. I still have a ways to go. It isn't exactly styled yet and I am missing a few things for my walls but I thought I'd give you a little peek and then let you in on some of my future plans.

So without further ado...

As you can see, I am embracing the light and putting as much white in my room as possible. I just wanted the space to feel as bright and airy as an 11x11ft room could. I'm also trying to reel in my inner pack rat/ knick knack queen and embrace the minimal. I am not achieving this completely, but I have come leaps and bounds from where I was before the move.

The walls are still bare, I have plans for them. I am just saving up the funds. I don't think anything is going to happen anytime soon since Christmas is right around the corner and I love buying presents, but I'll be putting little bits aside for a few floating shelves to go up in front of my desk and for a few nice frames for some of my photographs. I am thinking about printing a couple oversized prints to help anchor the space above my bed.

All in all I am happy with how everything is looking so far and excited for future projects.

Have you revamped anything in your space recently? Seen any projects on Pinterest you think I should try? brionyskerjancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00303629736063116733noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27558767.post-70753648708002081222013-11-06T19:13:00.001-05:002013-11-06T19:14:25.464-05:00Life Update
Hi friends!

So I am changing things up a little bit. I didn't want to go a whole week without posting but I haven't had any time to actually make any posts. As you know most of my posts on here are more about the things that I love and less about my everyday life, but because I'm going through some changes and haven't had a chance to share with you what I normally do I thought I'd sit down and update you a little on what's been going on these last few weeks. I promise I will go back to sharing all my favorite new beauty products, trends, tips AND I have a post coming up on the progress of my new space. For now though, because I haven't had time to put those posts together I am just going to talk to you a bit. I hope that is OK.

I've recently started a new part time job and with that job came three weeks of training in Lakeland Florida. Lakeland is not close and I've spent a lot of hours on the road going to and from. I now have an insane amount of respect for all those that have long daily commutes. I don't know how you do it. The training is only three weeks so the massive commute for me will end after this Friday. Thank You Lord! I'm going to have a lot more free time after that. Which I look forward to because I miss blogging. I know it's only been a little while but I've come to really enjoy making my blog posts and not having the time to do it has been a little bit of a downer for me.

For the last two years, since I moved to Florida from Michigan, I've set my own work schedule. I would work on freelance graphic projects, photography and my online classes when I wanted. There weren't set time constraints put on me from anybody but myself. Don't get me wrong, I had work to do and I made sure it got done in time but my hours were my own. With this new job, I'm back to having someone else set my schedule and that has been a transition for me. Not bad, but different. I keep hearing, "you're back in the real world sweetie, it's time to be a grown up" in the back of my head. Not that I think those that are self employed are any less grown up, more so it was I personally wasn't living like a grown up. I want to start saving for my future, but in order to do that I have to make more than what I need to live on... hence the new part time job. I will still have a lot of my time to do freelance graphics, photography and my online classes. I'll just have another income coming in that will help me when those jobs slow down. Anyone who is self employed has experienced the slow season and knows what I am talking about. It's nice to have a little security. Plus I'm ready, for what exactly I don't know, but I feel like this is a step in the right direction.

I've really enjoyed training for the most part. Yes, there are times when I get a little overwhelmed. I am learning a whole new set of skills and sometimes it feels like a lot to take in, but at the same time I like the challenge. I can honestly say that I like having somewhere to go and work. I like meeting and interacting with new people every day. I like learning a new skill. This new job, while it has given me some boundaries that I don't love (like not being able to leave on a trip at a moments notice, not having all my time to spend with my family when they visit) it has already brought a lot of good into my life.

Tomorrow, I have the first of two exams. I will be studying for it the rest of this evening and then a little in the morning once I get to Lakeland after my commute. I'll keep you updated. Wish me luck!

xoxo

their disfunction as part of my weekly entertainment.

I'm not sure if I've wrote about this on here yet, but I've started a new part-time job. I am really excited about it and I like all the people I've met so far, but before I can officially start working I have a month of training ahead of me. This training happens to be in Lakeland Florida, which is about 62 miles from me. Which in traffic time comes out to about a 1.5hr drive in the morning and a 2hr drive in the evening. Bringing me to a total of 3.5hrs on the road and A LOT of that time I'm barely moving.

To combat the road rage that tends to come over me in those stand-still situations, I decided to be proactive and have a plan to make the time more enjoyable. Yes, I know some of these ideas are obvious but I think they are worth mentioning because they get me through it and they may help get you through it as well.

1// Read a Book

Or rather have someone read one to you. Audio books are awesome. If the book is good, it gives you a mental escape from the bumper to bumper traffic that is taking up your reality. I am currently listening to Love Does by Bob Goff. Not only is it entertaining but his stories are insanely inspiring, they make me want to make the most of every opportunity. Even traffic.

2// Learn a New Language

If you are like me and haven't yet mastered a second language, your commute may be the perfect time to start. I have a cheap $5 Learn to Speak Italian Audio set, I bought in a bargain bin, that literally makes me giggle like crazy. I can't say I've retained anything I've listened to yet, but it sure is entertaining. I am thinking about investing in a better set, something like this or this because I do really want to learn.

3// Have a Scavenger Hunt

We all drive the same roads every day, we know them so well that sometimes it feels like we just ended up at home. Auto pilot kicks in and we've made all the turns without even thinking. Because we are so use to our commute, there is a pretty good chance we are missing a lot of cool details along the way. One way to break up your trip and to appreciate your surroundings is to challenge yourself. Create a list of things you'd like to see and then while your driving keep an eye out. There is a good chance, you are passing by some beauty every day and you don't even know it. I plan on making me own list.

4// Rock Out

If you are going to be in the car for a long period of time, I say embrace the fact that you are essentially alone and rock out to your favorite tunes. Create a playlist of all the songs you love, but wouldn't necessarily sing along to with other people around. Then crank up the volume and sing it out. I do this A Lot. Sometimes, to oldies like Backstreet Boys and Hanson and sometimes I use the time to discover new music. Right now I've been listening to Brandon and Leah, Kim Walker-Smith and Skyler Smith and Sara Bareilles.

Let me know in the comments what you do on your commute, I'm always looking for good ideas.

I am not a fan of moving or packing. It is exhausting and not really all that fun. I've had two days of moving so far and if I'm being honest I am over it. Haha. I still have all my big furniture left; the bed, desk, dresser and book shelf. But I have moved all of my bathroom stuff, clothes and all of my little knick knacks/ decor items.

The two tips I have to share when it comes to moving are... have patience with the process and if you aren't moving too far away move one room at a time. That way you can unpack each room as you go and you will feel less overwhelmed at the end. For me, it helps me feel like I've accomplished something when I see a room come together.

I am ready to just be done, but alas I won't be moving the rest until next Monday and Wednesday.

For now I will just be happy with what I've accomplished.
