We are all incredibly busy; we have places to be, people to see, things to do and we are so fixated on the next thing that we often speed through our days and miss out on the special in between moments. I am guilty of this, and I've decided to make an effort to constantly remind myself that the journey is just as important as the destination.

This past weekend, Tabitha and I had the awesome opportunity to take a road trip to Atlanta to feed our creative fires and get inspired. Whenever an opportunity like that arises, I jump on it. No questions asked, because I know how important it is to feed my passions and break my daily routine.

So this weekend, while we were at Jeremy Cowart's Lifefinder conference we had the opportunity to glean wisdom from someone experienced in our field. Jeremy is a very well known commercial and band photographer, he has had a very successful career in both photography and design. That in itself makes him a good teaching candidate, but the best thing about Jeremy is the heart that he has not only for the field of photography and pushing those of us who call ourselves photographers to be daring and original, he also has a huge heart for giving back. He has started an organization called Help Portrait that is all about sharing love and capturing memories. Jeremy spoke about giving back, using our talents in order to make the world around us a better place, and how we can use our platforms to give others a voice to the world. The concept is simple, but the impact that it has had on thousands of lives is as complex and as deep as they come.

I wanted to share this because, we were challenged to stop saying “everything’s been done before.” Sadly, this saying is known by all of us. It is the most used cop-out , that we as adults choose as a defense mechanism when we are being called out on our laziness and lack of imagination. An original idea doesn’t have to be huge, it just has to be yours. One of the slides Jeremy shared was, “It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.” I loved this quote and I wrote it down as one to keep in mind. Failure is scary, but you have to face that fear in order to experience anything worthwhile.

We are all in different fields, our schedules during the day play-out in a vast number of ways; that being said there is something in our day, in our lives that we can make our own and make the choice to do differently. We just have to start thinking outside of the box. The best way to initiate this change is to do something that inspires you. Change your route to work, treat yourself to a good book, go to the theater, see a live band play, right down your dreams, take a class, etc. There are an endless number of ways that you can find your inspiration. Once you've found it, run with whatever amazing thing comes to mind. Embrace your imagination and start using what makes you so special, with others. “Limitations live only in our minds. We all experience burn out, we hit a wall where we feel as if we can see the color draining from our lives and our purpose gets clouded with all the fog that fills our days. When burn out hits, it is time to be proactive and get inspired. “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Howard Thurman

I hope you take this post as an encouragement to go out and find what inspires you. Once you've found it, soak it in and get ready to live it out.

Travel Diary: San Francisco

Last week I had the opportunity to spend 7days in San Francisco with my awesome friend and business partner Tabitha. I hadn't been to California in over 26yrs (I was 2 and I don't remember it at all) and I was uber excited about exploring somewhere new.

I love big cities, I am always so taken by their diverse culture, their beautiful architecture, their rich history and their unique and eclectic blend of people. When I was younger I always thought I'd end up living in a city because of all of the above, but living in Chicago for 3months was enough time for me to realize that cities and I are better off as long distance loves, the kind that visit as often as they can but know they will never be in the same place for long. I may not be a full timer but I can't get over how alive you feel when you are in a city. I am sure it has something to do with the fact that there is always something going on, somewhere to go, something to see. It's an electric sort of energy.

One of my favorite ways to take in a big city is to go mega-tourist and jump on a big red open top bus, this seriously brings me soooo much joy. I am sure many of you are laughing at me, especially all of you city folk but I don't care how much you tease the tourist I love me a big red open top bus. I love that they are affordable, I love that the tickets last for two days, I love that they allow you to see the city from a different perspective and I love meeting and chatting with the tour guides. Tour guides are a gem. I like to ask them about their city; their favorite place to chill, eat, get coffee, explore, shop, etc. It is like having an old pal in a new city, they point you in the right direction to see all the best the city has to offer.

I had 3 days with the big red open top bus for this trip and I loved every minute. Because of the tour I was able to experience Union Square, the Tenderloin, China Town, North Beach, Lombard Street, Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito, Golden Gate Park, Hayes Street, Alamo Square, Haight District, Market Street, Mission Street, Japan Town and the Bay Bridge on a budget. Below are just a few of the shots I was able to snap as we drove through the city streets.

I absolutely fell in love with San Francisco, definitely one of my new favorite cities. I will leave you with the amazing Tony Bennett's words...I can now say I have a better understanding of them.

Family Excursion: Au Sable River

A couple of weeks before my move to Florida my family and I took a day trip down the Au Sable River. It was my first time kayaking in years, 15 yrs to be exact. I was a bit nervous at first but with a few helpful nudges from my best friend Jessica I embraced the fear and after a few scary moments of playing the balancing game with the quickly moving river, I started to get the hang of it.

There were a few hiccups on our journey but we laughed through them and made some pretty amazing memories. Below are a few pics I was able to snap with an underwater camera. You'll notice about half way down that we are all sportin ridiculously awesome ponchos, that is because not even 20min into our 5hr journey it began to pour. Luckily my parents are always prepared, the ponchos kept parts of us dry...well dryer than we would have been :) That was just one of the stories we had to laugh at and take with us at the end of the day.

I'm excited for our trip down the river next year!

In an effort to get myself more organized I made myself a desktop calendar. I saw this idea somewhere in the blog world last week and I absolutely loved it. I decided to use one of my pics from the coast of Italy for my backdrop and then I just used my trusty tablet to write the days on top. I added one of my favorite Dr. Seuss quotes as well, "You'll miss the best in life if you keep your eyes shut." This was a simple and fun project and I am looking forward to knowing what day I am currently living in :)

Radomski Family Shoot: Sibling Love

We recently had the opportunity to spend the afternoon shooting these two littles and their Great Grandparents. We fell in love with his stylish look (mom has a good eye) and her adorable dress, which was made by Great Grandma. We spent the two hours of our shoot finding fun locations in Frankenmuth and laughing through the heat. Not only were these two littles absolutely gorgeous, I mean look at those eyes and his curly hair, but they were so much fun and we had a blast shooting them. Their Great Grandparents were so sweet and definitely brought some smiles to our faces as well. Their love for each other and for their grandchildren was a beautiful thing to see. Thank you Nicole for letting us be a part of capturing your families memories and for spending the day with us!

Engaged: Micah & Emily

A few weeks ago we had the awesome privilege of spending time with this adorable couple. Emily and Micah are our friends from church and we were so honored to be given the opportunity to capture their love story.
One of our favorite things to do with our couples in love is to personalize their sessions, so knowing Emily and Micah met at Culinary School definitely inspired the location and styling of the first half of this shoot. We asked Emily to bring all the fixings for a cupcake party and styled their old classroom to highlight their love for each other and their love for creating great food. After our time in the kitchen, we headed out doors to get a little more playful. Who doesn't love a good frolic in a field, right?
Micah and Emily we are so happy for the two of you and can't wait to see what amazing things God has in store for you. While parts of your future are a mystery there are a few things we know; your journey together is going to be filled with deep love, belly laughs and lots of cupcakes.

Amazing. Incredible. Unreal. Just Wow. Awesome. Hilarious. Entertaining. Funny. Fun. Magnificent. Stupendous. Beautiful. Great. Lovely. Wonderful. Astounding. Astonishing. Remarkable. Marvelous. Extraordinary. Stunning. Brilliant. There are not enough adjectives to describe how amazing this concert was. I have been a fan of Josh Groban since the start of his career (a Grobanite as some would say,) he is one of my favorite artists and I've always dreamed of seeing him perform live. This past weekend that dream came true, my mom and I went to our first Josh Groban concert!!! Mom got the tickets earlier this summer and from that moment we were both impatiently waiting for the concert day to arrive...she scored some awesome seats too, good job mom! It was absolutely incredible, not only does he sound even better live than on his albums (which is so rare with music artists now-a-days) but he is also insanely hilarious and engaging. He is amazing at interacting with the crowd, he has the beautiful ability of making every interaction feel as if it is just between two old friends. When it came to the audience Q&A no matter what was thrown at him he was able to adapt and improvise with clever remarks and hilarious facial expressions. It was such a fun concert. The best part was that even though it was in a huge stadium, it still had the feel of a small intimate show. Here are a few pics from the evening.

The Palace doesn't allow professional cameras so I used my parents point and shoot...it did an awesome job. I will add some of the videos I took to this post a bit later. The lights blew out most of the picture but the sound is great :)

I have to be honest and say that I've checked his tour dates because I would love to go see him live again this year. There is a show in October that could be in my future :)

There is something so beautiful about two people really in love. You know what I'm talking about...the sweet glances, the soft touches and the knowing smiles. All those simple things that make you feel like your on top of the world. It is one of my favorite things to witness because it is so precious and rare.

This past weekend we had the pleasure of spending time with Britney & Tim. They have been apart for three months...so you can imagine how special this session was. It wasn't hard to come upon all of those sweet little moments. We had such a blast and we can't wait to shoot their wedding in just a few short weeks!

We had such an amazing time at Erica and David's wedding. It felt as if we were old friends from the get-go. The day was full of smiles, love and lots of laughs. I recently read an article about how there is a huge number of people in their mid to late twenties having a quarter life crisis. The jist of the article was that this is the time in your life where you get to discover the direction in which you want your life to move in. To discover who you are and who you want to be. This is the time to find a job you love, to get financially responsible, to fall in love aka figure out who you are and find the person that makes you your best, to have adventures with your friends, to dream and to know it is ok to chase after that dream.

I know from personal experience, that it can be a scary and intimidating time. A time of uncertainty, up until this point in your life there was always an already established next step. Something that you could naturally progress into. But now, everything is open. You have a blank slate and you have to figure out what you want to fill it with. Where you want to live, what makes you happy, how to support yourself financially, the list goes on. I think that part of the reason this time is so scary is that as people we naturally compare ourselves to others, we look at where our friends are in their lives and we start to wonder whether we will ever get there. Whether it be owning our own home, getting married, starting a family, finding a career...all these things are found at different paces for different people. You can't measure your life, your success, your dreams to what others have...your happiness won't come from sticking to their time line. It will come from recognizing yours.

While this season of life is full of questions and choices and can be scary because you are learning to stand on your own, I am happy to embrace it and relish this time of becoming.

Mini Shoot with Baby Raelyn

My beautiful little niece Raleyn turned ONE in December. (yes, I am that late.) Her mommy and I wanted to have a fun shoot with a tutu (that we made- we are crafty like that) and so this is what I came up with. I labeled this a mini shoot because it lasted all of 10min. Those 10min were filled with giggles and flying balloons but it all came to a crushing halt when the first balloon popped. Lucky for me she is a perfect little doll and every picture I snapped was a gem.

On a side note, it is amazing how fast a year goes by when you have a little one in your life. I am not a parent yet myself but I have a few littles in my life and time seriously flies by and they change so much every day. It is incredible and scary all at the same time. Hahah

I really love this quote. When I first read it I had a defensive feeling rise up in me, the statement about sadness really put me on edge for some reason. The more I thought about it the more I saw truth in it. For me being vulnerable with someone in my darkest moments is one of the hardest things for me to do. I've always tried to deal with things on my own. So to have someone in my life who I trust enough to not only share my laughter with but to also share my sadness is something that I definitely cherish. I had the privilege of going out with my dear friend Amanda today and she was gracious enough to answer some questions and let me take a few pictures of her. Amanda is a beautiful person who has overcome so much in her life, she is strong and gracious and honest. Sometimes brutally so, but I love her for it. Her best quality is that she is real, I pray you are all lucky enough to have a friend like her in your life.

Question: If you could tell your younger self one thing what would it be?
Answer: I always felt I had to control every situation and it wasn't until I was older that I realized that I'm not always in control of everything. That sometimes you just have to relax and have faith that God has a plan for you.

Question: If you could wake up anywhere tomorrow (no limitations) where would you want to wake up?
Answer: Somewhere alone in Greece or Italy, where I could get lost in the rich culture and yummy food. You know, live out my very own "Eat Pray Love" adventure.

Answer: A mid afternoon nap. A good book - one that allows you to completely lose yourself, where your 10 chapters in before you realize any time has passed. Being in nature, taking time to admire its beauty every day. Soaking in the sunshine on my boat, I really love the feel of the sun on my skin. Rolling around on the ground with my dogs.

Answer: I am most afraid of being vulnerable. I am very guarded and I am afraid of letting people love me.

Answer: Well I am going to say two things. First, I believe in the creativity of Ben and Jerry! Second, I believe in the love your pets can bring to your life in even the darkest of days. They love you unconditionally and accept you just as you are.

Tonight was good. Started off with a nice meal, then a great cup of coffee and finally hit the theater for a flick I've been wanting to see for awhile, Blue Valentine. I think Ryan Gosling is extremely talented and I heard the film got great reviews, so I was itching to discover this heartbreaking story for myself. The movie was exactly as I expected, it was raw emotion and broken spirits. It left you treading water in a pool of deep melancholy, clinging to the chance of survival, wishing there was more to the story. Wishing that with just a bit of effort their failing self destructive marriage could be saved. That hope could be found in their once upon a time love, that they could find their way back to their adolescent vision of what was good in each other. This isn't the kind of film you watch for enjoyment, honestly I saw it more as a warning...in the midst of the great mass of love stories that flood our theaters, all those happily ever afters, this film exposes the other side of the coin. That deep human fear of falling for someone and it not lasting, of you losing yourself in a person and not being able to find your way back, of you breaking them and knowing they will never recover, of having the fairy tale turn into a nightmare. I can't say I recommend this film because it is the kind of film that breaks your heart, but I can see why it has captured the attention of critics. So watch at your own risk.

I talked my dad into being my first portrait project participant. It is harder to ask people than I thought. I had good intentions when I went to the bookstore, I was equipped with my project journal and my camera, but I couldn't work up the nerve to ask a stranger if they'd be willing to be a part of this. That said, I decided I am going to ease myself into this. I definitely want to meet new people and hear their answers to these questions but I am going to start by asking some of the people I see every day. Their answers are just as much a mystery to me and I thought it would help me get more of a grasp on this project. So my dear friends, you know who you are, I will be coming your way soon. Get excited :)

Question: If you could tell your younger self one thing what would it be?

Answer: The things in life you think are important; your job, your house, your car, your status in society...those things don't define your worth. They seem so important at first but really what's important is being able to see the sun rise each morning, living your life in good health, and being with family. Enjoy the abundance of things this life has to offer but don't let them define who you are. Build your identity on what matters.

Question: If you could wake up anywhere tomorrow (no limitations) where would you want to wake up?

Answer: Heaven, in the presence of my creator.

Question: What are 5 things that come to mind when you think of the word Joy?

Answer: A good cup of coffee. Seeing the majesty of the Rocky Mountains. Angelo's Coney Dogs. A great looking car. The Red Wings winning the Stanley Cup.

I finally got on the Hipstamatic train! I wasn't sure it was going to happen for awhile there. My dear friend Gerri sold me her iPhone and when I got home and hooked it up to my comp I learned that I needed to Upgrade to the newest iTunes, I went to do that and learned that my Comp's Software is too old for the newest version and can't be upgraded. Basically I need to invest in a new computer. This is the 2nd time something like this has happened in the last month, the first was when I purchased Lightroom 3. I freaked out a bit haha but I did some problem solving and figured out a solution until I can afford a new comp. Any who, back on point, I am in LOVE with the Hipstamatic App. I knew it was awesome, now I get to experience the awesome. Haha yes I know that is corny. Carl was my willing model for my Day 7 pics...can't you just feel his enthusiasm?

I didn't have my camera with me today so I had to rely on my trusty phone camera. I love Chase Jarvis's book the best camera is the one that's with you. I wish my phone camera was a little better but the sunset was gorgeous so I am happy I was able to capture it at all.

I shot these on my way into work. I couldn't decide which one I liked best. I like the composition of the first image, the strong lines and the contrast between sky and bridge but I also like how the other one feels like you are moving through it. It is a little more out of focus than the first but I like the soft haze. I feel like they both suited the gray that was coating Michigan this morning. I am ready for sunny mornings, I am ready for golden and pink hues...enough of this gray. Haha Happy Friday All!

I pulled into the parking lot this morning and was already eagerly looking for my next picture. Today began very gray and had a dark haze to it, my precious inspiring light was not yet peeking its head. I was a little nervous. So when I passed the back window of my Wagon and saw the melted snow and the soft fog of the windows, I smiled, I knew I had found what I was looking for. With one little stroke of my finger I had my picture.

So, I woke up around 1am and I knew I wouldn't be able to fall back asleep until I took a picture. I was anxious that I was going to miss my first day of this project since Wednesdays are my busiest day of the week. I decided to start with a self portrait, since I am the most accessible subject and it was 1am. Haha. So with my hair still wet and no makeup on I set the light up directly in front of my face and blew it out a bit on purpose (cover all those lil' imperfections that are so evident at 1am.) I took 5 pics and this was the one caught my eye. I am already thinking about tomorrow. Have a great Wednesday All!

So based upon my own passions and your awesome input I've decided that I am going to do a mixture of the 3 options. (Thanks Tab for the idea.) I feel like this project has room to be something bigger than just a picture a day and I don't want to limit it to being fixed on one thing. I mostly just wanted it to have a theme because I wanted to have order and structure and a bit of direction, but I don't think giving it a category automatically means that it will have a theme. I was trying to build structure instead of embracing the wonder. Besides, shooting what catches my eye will be a theme all in itself, free of any prebuilt boxes.

I really want to challenge myself to see people, whether they are people I already know and are around regularly or if they are someone new. I believe there is inspiration and lessons that we can take from each person we have the opportunity to encounter, if we just spend the time getting to know them. I am going to try and do a couple of these a week, but will commit to doing at least one. I also think the self portrait one will be really revealing and challenging. I don't much like to be in front of the camera so I think it will be interesting to see what breaking myself out of that comfort zone will look like after a year. The rest of the days will be a mixture of all that inspires me. I am sure after a few weeks there will be somewhat of a theme to the images and I think that will be fun to discover. I know light is one thing that I am always drawn to, so I imagine many of the images will be full of light and how it bounces, reflects and illuminates.

I am really excited to get this project started, I am also a bit nervous because I know it is going to be quite a commitment. But I know it is important to make time for things that make you happy, I am looking forward to seeing how this journey develops. First post will come sometime tomorrow, I am not yet sure what it will be you'll have to check back to see.

2011 - 365 Portrait Project

I decided I need a personal photography project for 2011. I think it will help me learn more about my craft, more about finding and seeing inspiration and it will just challenge me to shoot every day. I know I should have planned this before the New Year began but better late than not at all, right? Ok, so there are a few ideas that I have that I'd like to get some input on. I would like to start Wednesday, January 5th and the project will be daily for the next year (until January 5th 2012.)

First Option: A Portrait a Day of someone new. I think this one could be hard because I don't run into many different people on a regular day but I also think that at the end of the year it could be pretty awesome, seeing all the new people I've met and shared a short moment with. If I were to do this one I would not only take their picture but I would also ask them a few questions such as: What is a your wildest dream or wish? What is unique about you and your life story? What inspires you? What would you do right now if you knew that you could not fail at completing it? Who or what has been the biggest influence in your life? What is something you need to learn? What makes you happy? Etc.

Second Option: A Self Portrait a Day. I think this one will present a challenge because it will push me to think more abstractly, but at the end of the year I think it could be really revealing as to what I think about myself and what I see when I look in the mirror.

Third Option: A Picture a Day with no specific category it has to fit into. Just the challenge of making sure I use my camera every day for a year. This is probably the easiest of the three but I know it will still be challenging on some days.

So what do you think? I'd like to hear which of the three would be most interesting to you, as well as any other ideas you'd like to add to the pot. Any feedback is appreciated :) Thanks All!

It's All Good: Good Music & Good Reads

When I discover something good I can't wait to share it with someone. Whether it's a new restaurant, a new movie, new music, or a new book. If I am loving it I am usually bursting at the seams to have someone else love it with me. Hahah
So on that note, Tuesday night I went to Come on Speak Up - Jesse Morrow's CD release concert. I recently heard one of Jesse's songs and I was an instant fan. I love finding new music, it just makes me happy. I don't know why but when I discover it I automatically try to figure out where it fits into my life's sound track. (Yes I know that is weird) Tuesdays concert was my ideal set-up, simple and intimate. There were quite a few talented performers, Nicholas Pidek and Mike Mains & The Branches were two that I had heard before and really enjoy.

Another new discovery for me this week was the series by Suzanne Collins called "The Hunger Games." Jasmine Star recently posted about this series and I was instantly intrigued. I picked up the entire trilogy yesterday on my lunch break and settled in around 10:30pm to start reading the first book last night. Within the first few pages I knew I was hooked, which is a very dangerous thing for me. I get so lost in a good book that I can't stop reading until I've completed it. And that is exactly what happened last night. I was even tempted to start the second book around 3:30am but I knew I wouldn't be able to function, so I did the responsible thing and went to bed. (I know going to bed around 11pm would have been more responsible but I am who I am.) I am super excited to dive into "Catching Fire" tonight. I can't wait to see what awaits Katniss. If you are in the mood for an easy, entertaining, suspenseful read...this is sure a trilogy you will want to check out. They are a bit violent but those scenes are not too graphic, they leave most of it to your imagination. If any of you start to read or have read them, let me know...I'd love to talk about them with someone.

Say Yes

There are times when you know something isn't good for you even if you want it, times when you have to walk away from an opportunity or a person, times when you have to say no. If you think about it, when you say no to one thing you are saying yes to something else. You may not know what it is but in time the fruits of that decision will be revealed. Today, I am focusing on the half glass full and looking at the little things that have the power to reroute my day, my week, my life. I am saying yes.

This week I say yes to making time to hang with good friends.

Family Cookie Extravaganza

Yesterday was our family cookie day and it was an eventful one to say the least. We weren't 2hrs into making the cookies when the power went out. My dad went out to get the generator and set it up to where we could use the oven and have a couple lights on. So we got back to work. The night was filled with lots of laughs, candles, crazy fire alarm noises and cookies. Our generator gave us its all and we were able to bake 6 of the 8 kinds of cookies we had planned to make. Below are some of the pics I took of our creative light source :) It was a great way to start a new tradition, we will never forget it.

Talking about good friends and good food, this past Saturday my mom and I hosted book club and we set out to have a good spread of food for our guests to enjoy. We decided to create two kinds of yummy scones, fruit salsa and cinnamon sugar chips and an apple salad. We had a lot of fun with the whole process. However, my mom was a little annoyed with my constant need to document each step. It was slowing things down, but in the long run everything came out fantastic. My stomach was not complaining. Below are just some of the pics I was able to take.

I thought I'd share the recipes for all the yumminess. They were all pretty easy to make and they were definite crowd pleasers.

Fruit Salsa
1 Cup finely chopped Strawberries
1 can of Mandarin Oranges
3 Medium Kiwi
1 can crushed Pineapple
1 tablespoon Lemon Juice
1-1/2 teaspoons of sugar

Cinnamon Chips
10 flour tortillas
1/4 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Combine the first six ingredients in a bowl, cover and refrigerate until serving. For chips brush tortillas with butter, cut each into eight wedges. Combine sugar and cinnamon, sprinkle over tortillas. Place on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 5-10min.

Apple Lettuce Salad
1/2 Cup unsweetened apple juice
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
2 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil
4-1/2 teaspoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Dash of ground nutmeg
1 medium red apple, chopped
1 medium green apple, chopped
6 cups torn green leaf lettuce
6 cups torn red leaf lettuce

In large salad bowl, whisk the first 10 ingredients until blended. Add apples; toss to coat. Place lettuce over apple mixture
(do not toss.) Refrigerate; toss just before serving.

Scones: Salty and Sweet
Dough
2 cups all purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 tbsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup cold butter, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
1 cup whipping cream, divided

Salty: Bacon, Cheddar and Pimiento
Omit sugar
Stir in 3/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1/4 cup finely chopped cooked bacon
3 tbsp. finely chopped pimiento with the cream

Sweet: Chocolate-Cherry
Stir in 1/4 cup dried cherries coarsely chopped
2 oz. coarsely chopped semisweet chocolate with the cream

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Stir together dough ingredients (not the whipping cream yet,) cut butter into flour mixture with a pastry blender until crumbly and mixture resembles small peas. Freeze 5 minutes. Add 3/4 cup plus 2 tbsp. cream, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn dough out onto wax paper; gently press or pat dough into a 7-inch round (mixture will be crumbly.) Cut round into 8 wedges. Place wedges 2 inches apart on a lightly greased baking sheet. Brush tops of wedges with remaining 2 tbsp. cream just until moistened. Bake at 450 degrees for 13 to 15min or until golden.

Sneak Peek: The Swartz Family - Family Session Portraits

We had a fantastic shoot this past Saturday with the gorgeous Swartz Family. I had been working on building the set of this shoot for a week and I was so excited to see it all come together in our studio. On top of that I couldn't wait to take pictures of Derek and his adorable little red head. He was a pro in front of the camera, all eyes were on him and he knew just what to do. The shoot was filled with lots of toothy grins and sweet little laughs; we loved every minute. Erika, Kurt and Derek we had an absolute blast spending the morning with you!

I love the Smell of Snow in the Air

Yesterday was the first of December and the first snow of the season. When I opened my door that morning I was a little caught off guard but I thought it was a perfect way to start a new month and a beautiful intro to the chilly winter we have ahead. I am not the biggest fan of the cold but I do see the beauty in freshly fallen snow. Ever since I was little I've been able to smell coming snow in the air,(yes, I did just say that.) I've kind of secretly thought of it as my own mini-super power, I don't know how it benefits me or others but that doesn't matter because it makes me a lil' special (or weird.) Haha Ok, so back on point. One of my favorite smells aside from a good spring rain is the smell of coming snow fall, whenever the scent hits me it has the ability to make me stop and look up, it steals away a small moment and it gets my imagination thinking of the beauty that is coming.

Now, I am ready to make snow angels. What's your favorite thing about the winter season? Do you have the same super-power as me? Haha

I just love the way the light breaks through my curtains at the start of each day, I am not a morning person by any means but the warm glow is comforting to me. I try to remind myself that every day is a gift and every morning I am given a new chance to make that day count. Life is full of blessings that can turn your world around and alter the way your heart beats and is also full of heartache that has the power to bring you to your knees; but no matter what the day holds we have the gracious promises of God to stand on. That He will never leave us or forsake us, that He has a plan and purpose for our lives, that He loves us so much that He died and rose again so that we might truly live. We don't know what tomorrow holds, but we do know that no matter what it is we are not alone.

Anticipation

To start off I must say that I am a bit of a travel bug, I can never get enough. Whether it is getting in my car and driving a few hours away or if it's hoping on a plane and crossing the Atlantic. I love everything about a trip. I love picking out the destination, I love figuring out the budget, I love figuring out places to visit and restaurants to dine, I even love saving for a trip. I love getting closer and closer to my goal, closer and closer to my adventure. I am currently saving for a trip to France and Italy for next summer. I am about half way to my goal. To encourage myself, and to fight off any impatience, I visited the National Geographic site and took in some of the beauty I am going to behold with my own eyes in just a few short months. I am not sure it actually helped with the impatience but it definitely stirred up some great anticipation.

Since France and Italy are a little ways off, and I cannot elude the constant travel itch, my friend Rachel and I have decided to start planning mini day-trips every month. Our rules are that the destination must be within a 6hr driving range (from Davison, MI,) there has to be some fun/interesting stops along the way, and there has to be a semi-cheap hotel to stay at. I am excited for our mini-adventures. I will be sure to keep you updated when we start officially planning our first. If you have any suggestions for us please share, it could be anything from your favorite place to eat, to an awesome park or landmark. We are up for anything.

Fall Family Mini Shoots: The Trieloffs

Washington: Night One

After getting settled and unpacked from my 10hr drive, Amanda and I ventured out to dinner at Art and Soul and then walked our way from the Jefferson Monument to the Lincoln....it was a great first night.

Now that I have a little more time because Amanda is working, I thought I'd share a bit more detail about yesterdays adventures. The drive to DC wasn't bad, the weather was gorgeous and the traffic was decent, that is until I got to DC and then traffic was absurd but we'll touch on that later. I had a good road trip music mix of Jesus Culture, Jonsi, John Mayer, Ingrid Michealson and Taylor Swift. I absolutely love her new Cd, Speak Now, I was singing it out at the top of my lungs. I am a major road trip junkie, I love being on the road. Each time I cross a new state line I get a jolt of excitement. My favorite part about driving East is that first view of the Mountains. They always leave me breathless. One funny thing that happened when I was going through the Toll's in PA, the toll booth operator asked me how many people I had to flash to get the beads that were hanging on my rear view. I was so caught off guard that all I could do was laugh which then led to him doing a creepy eyebrow lift. Haha It was absolutely ridiculous, but it definitely spiced up the 2nd half of my drive. As a said above the traffic in DC was absurd, I sat in stand still for about an hour and a half. I started entertaining myself by taking pictures of the people in the cars next to me. It was fun, some of them actually got really into it.
Once I got settled in at the hotel Amanda and I met her co-worker Rich for dinner at Art and Soul. They both were raving about the Macaroni and Cheese there, so I had to check it out myself. It was pretty good. After dinner Amanda and I set out to see the Jefferson Memorial, well actually Amanda said the Jefferson Memorial but what she meant was the Lincoln. So once we got out of the cab we admired the Jefferson Memorial from the road and then started the trek over the river and to the Washington Monument and the Reflection Pool and then to the Lincoln. The city lights were mesmerizing, along with the gorgeous architecture. DC is a definite stand-out when it comes to big cities. More to come...
